Real Techniques was founded by Sam and Nic Chapman. The two women grew up around makeup as their aunt was a successful celebrity makeup artist with clients such as Princess Diana and David Bowie. When it became the time to choose a career, the obvious choice was makeup as the sisters were passionate about beauty and wanted to follow in their aunt’s footsteps. Sam attended a makeup artistry school before moving to London, where she worked on department store makeup counters and on clients as a freelance artist. She worked with the likes of Mac and Estee Lauder on photoshoots and fashion shows, whilst Nic was also finding her own path in the makeup industry.
In 2008, Sam uploaded a video to YouTube after a friend had asked her how to create a smoky eye. Other women began to find Sam’s Pixiwoo channel and pretty soon, Nic joined forces with her to collaborate on looks. It wasn’t until 2010 that the idea for the Real Techniques business was developed – as Youtube became a way for everyday women to learn about professional makeup application, creating a line of brushes seemed like a great fit for the sisters. In 2011, Real Techniques was launched. It took great brush quality and paired it with enabling people to learn about application from professionals. Since then, the brand has become incredibly popular in both the UK and the USA, building a community around the world of makeup enthusiasts who identify with Sam and Nic.
Real Techniques Brushes
Real Techniques has a wide variety of brushes available, both as singles and in a multi-piece set. There are brushes for both the face and the eyes. You will find foundation brushes, powder brushes, bronzer brushes, concealer brushes, eyebrow brushes, eyeshadow brushes and setting brushes. There are different brush collections. The Original collection brushes consist of the basics i.e. foundation brushes and are generally an orange colour. There is also a Bold Metals collection with silver, gold and rose gold brushes that are pleasing to the eye.
Real Techniques gift sets make a great present for someone who loves makeup and they are highly affordable. You can currently buy the Your Picks: Berlin set, which consists of five brushes chosen by fans, with a design which has been inspired by the Berlin street art scene. There is also a Multitask gift set which aims to simplify your makeup routine.
Real Techniques Core Collection
The Real Techniques Core Collection is a gift set. It is perhaps the most popular set offered by Real Techniques and has won awards. It contains four brushes: a pointed foundation brush, a contour brush, a detailer brush and a buffing brush. It also comes with a panoramic case which is ideal for storage. The bristles of the brushes are synthetic which makes them easy to clean and also prevents product build up.
Real Techniques Starter Set
The Real Techniques Starter Set is a gift set which focuses on eye makeup. It has five brushes which can be used to create five steps to enhancing the details of your eyes. It contains a base shadow brush, deluxe crease brush, an accent brush, a fine liner brush and a brow brush. It also has a panoramic case which can act as a carrier when you are on the go – it is also ideal for keeping your brushes organised and drying them upside down. The brushes are synthetic and the bristles make them really easy to clean.
Real Techniques Sponges
Real Techniques has a range of sponges to assist you in your makeup application. The Miracle Complexion Sponge is ideal for applying foundation and has been compared to the cult Beauty Blender sponge which is more expensive. There are also the Miracle Mini Eraser sponges which are ideal for applying concealer underneath your eyes. The Miracle Sculpting sponge is best for contouring and there is also a Miracle diamond sponge which is part of the Bold Metals collection.
Real Techniques Stockists
Although the creators of the Real Techniques brand are British, the website ships from the USA. For that reason, your order can take a while to arrive and you may need to pay customs charges. Luckily, there are UK stockists of the brand – Boots and Superdrug. You can find Real Techniques products on both the Boots and Superdrug websites as well as in your local store. You can also purchase the brushes from Amazon, Asda, Ocado, Feel Unique, Very, All Beauty, Look Fantastic and Beauty Chamber. Prices will vary, but Superdrug, Boots and Asda are often the most reasonably priced – it’s cheapest to purchase from the Real Techniques website but then you will need to take into account shipping and customs charges.
About Real Techniques
Since launching in 2011, Real Techniques has really taken over the beauty industry thanks to the combination of great quality products with expert advice from relatable artists. The brushes are colour coded and each brush says on the shell what it is for, which helps women understand their makeup application. The brushes are all hand-cut with synthetic brushes which ensure a flawless finish.
