LinkedIn in the UK is a useful tool for networking, especially if you are on the career ladder, are looking for a new position or are looking to learn about a new profession. The layout of LinkedIn is fairly similar to that of a Facebook page in that you have a ‘news feed’ where you can see other people’s activity. Instead of having ‘friends’ or ‘followers’ you have ‘connections’. LinkedIn will suggest connections for you to add, and the more connections you connect with, the more you will build up your network. If you want to contact someone directly, you can message them privately using LinkedIn messenger. You must be ‘connected’ with someone in order to message them, and LinkedIn does restrict the amount of messages you can send without being a Premium member. By heading over to your network on your LinkedIn account you will see a list of your connections. Here, you can directly message them. Each of your connections will have their job position written directly underneath their name and photo. If you are looking for a particular person on LinkedIn you can search them using their name and the search bar. If you are looking for people within a particular profession then you can search for that profession instead. There is a way of messaging people outside of your network and that is by turning on Open Profile. If the person you want to engage with also has their open profile turned on, you can send them a message even if they are outside of your network. If you are a regular user of LinkedIn or your company relies on its use, then you can upgrade to a more advanced version of the programme known as LinkedIn Premium. There is a charge for this service.
Every user of LinkedIn will have a login that they will need to enter each time they wish to access their account. You login usually consists or your email address and a password of your choice. If you have forgotten your login details then please call LinkedIn customer services.
Your LinkedIn login will take you to your LinkedIn account where you can manage your own profile. Your profile is what people will read when they are viewing your account. Because LinkedIn is used mainly for professional networking, your profile will consist of your previous experience, your skills and you current and previous job positions and qualifications such as A Levels, university etc. Any skills listed are open to be endorsed by your fellow connections. When your skills are endorsed, they are basically being backed up by other people and your name is then associated with these skills. There is also room for a photo on your profile. You can post anything you like on your LinkedIn page and any recent updates will show in the news feed of other connections. This is a space to post things such as blog posts and work related news.
LinkedIn also has a recruiting tool which is handy if you work in recruitment or even if your business is looking to hire new staff. LinkedIn recruiter means you can find the perfect hire quickly and easily. Features of the program include unlimited access to LinkedIn’s network of 400 million+ people and the ability to use InMail to contact them directly (you will be given 150 per month to use). It also has 20+ advanced search filters so that you can search for that ideal candidate. If you have hope in particular candidates and know that they are most likely to engage, then you can prioritise them using search spotlights. Recruiter is also available as an app for Ios and Android.
You can also use LinkedIn’s job search to discover your next career move. You can search using a job title, a keyword or the name of a particular company. LinkedIn will also suggest vacancies for you according to the positions and skills you have listed on your profile. You can apply directly for the position from LinkedIn Jobs and if any catch your eye you can save them to apply at a later date. Your LinkedIn jobs log in will be the same as your LinkedIn profile log in. You can signal that you are ‘open’ to a new position by turning on your preferences from the LinkedIn jobs page. If you turn this on, it alerts recruiters to the fact that you are job hunting, and they may be more inclined to contact you. Call the helpline for more information.
This is LinkedIn’s upgrade and is great for regular users of LinkedIn or those who have a company that relies on its use. LinkedIn Premium can help accelerate your own career or it can massively improve the sales of a business. Upgrading is easy, simply visit the LinkedIn Premium website and select to ‘upgrade now’. There are four plans available to use, depending on how you use your LinkedIn account. You can select from ‘Career’, ‘Business’, ‘Sales’ and ‘Hiring’. Each option has its own benefits. LinkedIn offers free trials of LinkedIn Premium so that you can see if it works for you. After the trial, the cost of LinkedIn Premium varies depending on what plan you select, but all of the pricing is online.
