Adidas is a global sports brand which originated in Germany. It is one of the largest manufacturers of sportswear in the world – founded in 1948 by Adi Dassler with the name ‘Adidas’ derived from the founder’s name. Dassler first made shoes designed for the track under the name of Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik, but today Adidas is more known as a lifestyle brand thanks to its iconic streetwear and footwear designs. The best selling style of trainers is the Stan Smith tennis shoe, which has sold over 40 million pairs.
You can purchase Adidas products directly from the Adidas website or from third-party stockists. In the UK, third-party stockists include Schuh, Office, Sports Direct, Foot Asylum, Decathalon, Foot Locker and ASOS. There are also Adidas shops in many towns and cities – you can use the store locator on the Adidas website to find your nearest store.
Inspiration for Adidas’ trainer designs come from sport, hip-hop and even car tyres. There are many diverse styles available. Here are some of the current styles of trainers available:
- Gazelle – a 1990s style shoe with a leather upper and contrast heel.
- Tubular – Made from neoprene with an elastic strap
- Superstar – Derived from basketball courts in the 1960s with a shell toe look.
- Stan Smith – A modern take on the classic tennis shoe
- Flashrunner – Stylish shoe with a mesh upper which takes inspiration from 70s runner shoes.
- Loop racer – Thick and lightweight with a cushioned insole.
- ZX Flux Em – Modern take on the original 1980s ZX Flux with a minimalist style.
- NMD_XR1 – Stretch mesh upper with a camouflage print.
- New York shoes – Taken from the Adidas archives with a 1980s street style influence.
- Bermuda – A football style look with a suede texture.
- ZX Flux Primeknit – A lightweight and breathable Primeknit upper mixed with a futuristic look.
The Adidas Superstar is an iconic trainer which first originated in 1969 on the basketball court. Before long, the shoe had taken over street style, skateboarding and even the hip hop stage (rap group Run DMC famously got a £1million endorsement deal with the brand after they asked the audience to put their Adidas up in the air at a concert in Madison Square Garden). Today, the Superstar is the second-most popular Adidas trainer behind the Stan Smith. It has a classic leather coating with a signature shell toe and zigzag edging on the three stripes. You can choose the shoe in many different colours such as white, off-white, metallic and black. You can also customise your own, with options for iridescent stripes and coloured laces.
Adidas Stan Smith
The Stan Smith trainers were originally created in 1971 for the tennis player Stan Smith and they later became the brand’s most popular shoe. The low-top style paired with smooth leather upper and the perforated three stripes makes them a classic look to dress up or dress down. The shoe was originally made with green detailing, but you can now find many different colours and patterns including cracked suede and metallic. You can also find different materials such as patterned leather and mock-croc to make your shoe unique. You can also completely customise your pair with unique laces, tongues and insoles.
Adidas Boost is a type of running shoe. The name comes from the ultra-cushioned midsole which are designed to help you push off to give you a comfortable run. The Ultra Boost style of shoe features a Primeknit upper texture, meaning that the fabric is stretchy and very comfortable on long runs. The Pure Boost shoe has a breathable mesh upper texture and is ideal for runners with a high arch as the shoe is designed to fit comfortably around that.
Whether you need a tracksuit for athletic purposes or just want something comfortable to wear around the house, Adidas has a great selection. Men can choose from sweatshirt and pant styles, or jacket and pant styles. You will find classic cotton fabrics or breathable fabrics. For women, the choice of tracksuits is slightly more restricted, but there are still several styles such as tracksuits with a bomber jacket or tracksuits with sweatshirts.
If you want a track jacket or a cosy pull-over hoodie, Adidas has plenty of choice for both men and women. You will find subtle designs with stripes down the arms or designs with the Adidas logo across the front. You can choose from a range of colours including black, grey, white and blue.
Women seeking leggings to work out in or just for everyday wear will find a great selection at Adidas. There are track pants designed to co-ordinate perfectly with Superstar trainers, Climaheat tights which are ideal for running and sweatpants ideal for training.
The brand Adidas is part of the Adidas Group which also includes Reebok, the TaylorMade-Adidas golf company and Runtastic, a fitness technology company. The name Adidas was originally registered in 1949 by Adi Dassler, after he had an argument with his brother who had been helping him to run his previous footwear company. The argument seemed to have stemmed from the fact that Adi’s older brother Rudolf had established another sports brand, Puma.
Today, Adidas is still headquartered in rural Germany. It has around 50,000 employees and is one of the largest sportswear brands in the world, behind the likes of Nike.
